6 simple ways to make our city better

Be a good neighbor.

1. Be a kind neighbor, be a friendly face. Treat others the way they would like to be treated. Do the simple things, like saying “please,” “excuse me,” and “thank you.” Give everyone you meet your full attention – eyes up, ears on. People deserve to feel like their words and actions matter.

2. Volunteer your time. You’re likely busy, we know, but any spare time you can squeeze out of your schedule could make an important impact on our city. Many public service places in town need all the help they can get.

3. Get informed and active in local government. The beauty of local issues, as compared to state and federal ones, is that we can more easily understand them and appreciate their impact. Further, you can witness real change as a direct result of your efforts.

4. If you see something, say something. Most people are wired to believe that others are responsible and aware of what’s going on, and often we think we can just leave things in their hands. But, when we all think that way, nothing good gets done. So, perhaps the most effective way to engage with your community and inspire others to do the same is to speak up when you see injustice or unfairness, or, on a more positive note, actions worthy of praise. Your voice and efforts have the power to stop crime or encourage someone who is working tirelessly and feeling invisible. Say something!

5. Slow down and obey traffic laws. Driving just 5 mph slower around town might save someone’s life. Watch carefully for pedestrians and bikers.

6. Fix up your front porch and yard. It’s easy to burrow inside your house and ignore the outside, but neighbors who keep their porches and front yards looking nice make the area more enjoyable and potentially increase nearby property values.
